South Nyack is a village incorporated in 1878 in the town of Orangetown in Rockland County, New York. It is located west of the Hudson River. The village is the western terminus of the Tappan Zee Bridge. The village had a population of 3,510 at the 2010 census, and a total area of 1.7 square miles.
Dutch families farmed the land in Nyack for over a hunudred years. Many farmers owned a sloop to transport their produce to New York City. They soon found there was also market in the city for red sandstone. The quarry business prospered, and between 1810 and 1840 there were 31 quarries employing about 200 men between Grand View and Upper Nyack. Hudson River sloops were improved, carrying freight and stone in addition to passengers and produce. Motivated by the need to carry stone and Haverstraw brick, Nyack developed more boatyards and became the largest producer of sloops along the Hudson. Downtown Nyack grew exponentially. Smaller neighborhoods grew up around boatyards in Upper and South Nyack. The Nyack Steamboat Association built the steamboat Orange in 1829 providing faster, more reliable service than the sloops. The railroad came to Nyack in 1870, providing greater speed and capacity for passengers and freight, and rapid growth ensued. Town government was no longer seen as an effective means of dealing with the area’s needs, therefore village incorporation was discussed. Fearing higher taxes, those in the northern part of Nyack village formed their own municipal corporation first, named Upper Nyack. Nyack village was still incorporated, although without this northern portion. Residents in the southern part of Nyack village, however, soon became dissatisfied with the notion of paying taxes that more heavily benefitted the rest of the village. After succeeding in dissolving Nyack’s corporation, the southern portion of the former village incorporated as the village of South Nyack. The area between Upper Nyack and South Nyack was reincorporated thereafter, again as Nyack.
