Clarkstown is a town in Rockland County, New York. The town is on the eastern border of the county, located west of the Hudson River. As of the 2010 census, the town had a total population of 84,187. Clarkstown is located 25 miles from midtown Manhattan. The Town encompasses approximately 41 square miles and includes the hamlets of Bardonia, Central Nyack, Congers, Nanuet, New City, Rockland Lake, Valley Cottage, West Nyack, all of the Village of Upper Nyack, and portions of the Villages of Nyack and Spring Valley.
The town of Clarkstown was founded in 1791 in Orange County, before Rockland County was established, with a population under 2000. In 1950 Clarkstown’s population was approximately 15,000. With the opening of the Tappan Zee Bridge in 1955, the Palisades Interstate Parkway, and the Garden State Parkway extension, the population grew rapidly in Clarkstown during the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, exceeding 80,000 by the year 2000 census.
Clarkstown has a vast park system that continues to grow as the Town secures more land under the Open Space program. The park system incorporates about 700 acres of park land, community centers, outdoor pools, picnic areas, ball fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, outdoor basketball courts, and a historic home and barn. All Town parks are for Clarkstown residents only with the exception of The Davenport Preserve and the miniature golf course located at Germonds Park, both of which are open to the general public.
