Palisades, formerly known as Snedens Landing, is a hamlet in the Town of Orangetown in Rockland County, New York, located west of the Hudson River. It is the southernmost community in Rockland County.
During the Revolutionary War the Palisades area saw considerable activity. Marking the dividing line between American and British combatants, loyalties were split more than usual in such a conflict, as seen within the family of Mollie Sneden, after whose family Snedens Landing was named. She and most of her sons were Tories, but her son John was a Patriot. John was allowed to keep the family ferry operating across the Hudson River during the Revolution. It said that Mary once hid a British soldier in her house from the patriots, and then later ferried the soldier across the river. In 1780 George Washington ordered a blockhouse to be built at Snedens Landing to serve as a guard for the ferry service and an intelligence and communication center. The General is known to have passed through the area, visiting the blockhouse a number of times. In 1800 the town was well suited to become a river center. the Palisades Cliffs emerge from the west bank of the Hudson River and form an obstacle for access to the river. There is break in the terrain at Snedens Landing, where the landscape is jagged but not too steep. At the time there was high demand for quarried stones for paving city streets and building houses. It is believed that the stones cut from the Palisades Cliff paved many New York City streets, including Broadway. Snedens Landing provided farmers and quarrymen with the first access for the approximate location where the George Washington Bridge connects New York and New Jersey today.
Modern day Palisades is almost entirely residential with the exception of a small industrial area section on the Tappan border. The hamlet has a registered historic district known as the Closter Road – Oak Tree Road Historic District. The hamlet`s significant institutions include an IBM conference center and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University.
Weather varies drastically each season in Palisades. Residents should have cooling and heating systems installed in their homes. The location of Palisades in the northeastern United States means it is susceptible to frigid temperatures during the winter seasons and warm temperatures during the summer seasons. Daytime temperatures vary from the upper-70s and low-80s during the months of June, July, and August. In the winter months, temperatures tend to remain in the 30s. When properly installed by professional HVAC technicians, central air conditioning units and heat pumps keep Palisades residents comfortable in their homes all year.
