Nanuet is a hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Clarkstown in Rockland County, New York. The third largest hamlet in Clarkstown, it is located 2 miles north of the New Jersey border, and midway between Manhattan and Bear Mountain, at 19 miles from each. The population of Nanuet was 17,882 at the 2010 census, and it has a total area of 5.4 square miles of land.
The opening of the New York State Thruway, the Tappan Zee Bridge, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway in the mid-1950s helped usher in decades of population growth and real estate development, including the construction of the Nanuet Mall and local shopping centers. Nanuet was originally named Clarkstown until 1856, when the current name was imparted by Munsee Chief Nannawitt, who sold lands in North Jersey and signed the Wawayanda Patent. The topography of the land in the area is a result of the massive glaciation of the last Ice Age, because of which, the soil is extremely rocky and the surface shows glacial erratic boulders. The glacial ice scraped off and carried with it rocks and minerals from as far north as Canada, depositing them in Nanuet and other areas of southern New York. This is thought to be the source of the manganese-rich minerals, as well as the placer ore for gold panning within Nauraushaun Brook. There are fossil impressions of huge Precambrian Era jellyfish in the wooded, undeveloped regions. Lake Nanuet Park offers residents a summer pool designed to look like a naturally occurring lake, and recreational baseball/softball fields.
Nanuet is located in a region of the United States where summers are warm and humid and winters are long and cold. During the months of June, July, and August, daytime temperature highs vary from the mid to upper-70s. However, it is not uncommon for heat waves to pass through the area. When heat waves do pass through, the combination of high humidity levels and warm temperatures create an environment that is uncomfortable to most people. Cooling systems like central air conditioning units help Nanuet residents remain cool and comfortable indoors when temperatures rise.
Winters in Nanuet are long and harsh. The average daytime temperature high in the month of January is 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Heating systems like heat pumps should be installed in the homes of Nanuet residents. These systems protect residents and their homes from potential damages caused by extremely cool temperatures. When temperatures rise, an efficient heating system may literally be a lifesaver for a resident of Nanuet, New York.
