Piermont is a village in Rockland County, New York. Piermont is in the town of Orangetown, located north of the hamlet of Palisades, east of Sparkill, and south of Grand View-on-Hudson, on the west bank of the Hudson River. The village had a population of 2,510 at the 2010 census, and a total area of 1.1 square miles. Piermont is on the west bank of the Hudson River, south of the Tappan Zee Bridge.
The village was incorporated in 1847, named Tappan Landing by Dr. Eleazar Lord, author, educator and deacon of the First Protestant Dutch Church and first president of the Erie Railroad. “Tappan Landing,” “Tappan Slote,” or “Taulman Landing,” as the little port on the Hudson River was called, became the original port for southern Orange County. Sparkill Creek cuts through the north end of the Hudson Palisades, providing easy access to the fertile valley of the unnavigable upper Hackensack River. The valley in the Palisades created by the creek also provided a way for the Erie Railroad to easily reach the Hudson, and the railroad built a long pier in 1839 as its main terminal. During World War II the pier was the ferry terminal where troops from Camp Shanks marched and were then transported to New York Port of Embarkation piers for transfers overseas, bound for the European Theater. Late in the 20th century, Piermont became a casual day trip spot for tourists from New York City.
Piermont sits along the riverside, home to some of the Valley’s top art galleries and eateries today, with so much to see and do. The Piermont Pier runs a full mile along the Hudson River, a hotspot for bikers and joggers. Fishing is popular during warmer months, while the Piermont Marsh on the westside of the pier is a year-round destination for bird watchers. The Piermont Train Station and Museum holds a place on the National Historic Register for its significance as a transportation hub and architectural monument. Next to Sparkill Creek, Eleanor Stroud Park contains a pond, and is named after a woman who lived near the pond on Ferdon Avenue, who looked after the children who ice skated at the pond and served them hot chocolate, hot dogs and cookies from a nearby shed for decades. The pond is free to the public and open until 9 PM every day the green signal flag is posted.
Residents of Piermont find it necessary to have access to cooling and heating systems. The location of Piermont in the northeastern United States means it is susceptible to frigid temperatures during the winter seasons and warm temperatures during the summer seasons. When properly installed by professional HVAC technicians, central air conditioning units and heat pumps keep Piermont residents comfortable in their homes all year.
