Suffern is a village that was incorporated in 1796 in the town of Ramapo in Rockland County, New York. Suffern is located 30 miles northwest of Manhattan. As of the 2010 census, Suffern had a population of 10,723, and a total area of 2.1 square miles.
The history of the Village of Suffern is incredibly rich. Guests who have taken advantage of Suffern’s hospitality have included George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton. “The Point of the Mountains” or “Sidman’s Clove” were names previously given to the area originally inhabited by the Ramapough, a tribe of Munsee, who were a division of the great Lenape nation. Upon Sidman’s death, the land passed into the hands of his son-in-law, John Smith, who sold it to John Suffern. John Suffern, first Rockland County judge, settled near the base of the Ramapo Mountains in 1773, and called the place New Antrim, after his home in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, where his Huguenot ancestors had settled. The village was founded in 1796. The Erie Railroad began operating in 1841 in Suffern, where it became an important and busy station. In consideration for the right-of-way given it by Judge Edward Suffern, son of founder John, to lay track across his 6 miles of land, the Erie Railroad named their depot “Suffern’s Station” and so the village became known as Suffern. New Yorkers filled the passenger trains in summer bound for rural regions, in search of a getaway from urban life. Relatively isolated prior to the 1860s, Suffern became a gateway for the upstate Erie traveler. Twenty trains a day, loaded with seasonal tourists, stopped at the impressive Victorian depot. Word soon spread among the travelers of the natural scenery at the “summer resort.” Suffern hosted many vacationers, whether staying at local resort hotels or just switching trains while passing through.
To this day, Suffern is a unique crossroad for transportation, industry, and tourism. Accessible by trains, buses, and highways, Suffern is home to a thriving business district with a wide array of diverse restaurants, shops, and a growing arts, filming, and cultural activities center.
Residents of Suffern, New York find it necessary to have cooling and heating systems installed in their homes. Daytime temperature highs during the months of December, January, and February range from the low to mid-30s. During the summer seasons, temperatures range from the upper-70s to mid-80s. However, the area is not immune to heat waves. Cooling and heating systems should be installed in the homes of Suffern residents. When properly installed by professional HVAC technicians, the systems protect residents and their homes from potential damages caused by extreme temperatures.
