By 1675 the Tallman family settled the area, their farm located in Nyack. In 1828, Route 59 was opened, a new road to the Hudson River. The farmers of Airmont could now ship by horse and wagon to the river. An even faster mode of transportation came in 1841 with the opening of the Piermont branch railroad. The village was named Airmont in 1890. The rate of growth remained slow through the 1950’s, but with the opening of the New York State Thruway and the Tappan Zee Bridge, the population soared, bringing the agricultural era to an end.
Situated in the Ramapo Mountains, the Village of Airmont enjoys a fresh air environment, thanks to its thick vegetation.
