Haverstraw is a town in Rockland County, New York. It is located north of the Town of Clarkstown and the Town of Ramapo; east of Orange County, New York; south of the Town of Stony Point; and west of the Hudson River. The town runs from the west to the east border of the county in its northern part. The town had a population of 36,634 at the 2010 census, and a total area of 27.4 square miles, containing three villages, one of which is also known as Haverstraw. Haverstraw village is the original seat of government for the town, hosting the area’s historic central downtown business district and the densest population in northern Rockland County.

The name comes from the Dutch word Haverstroo meaning “oats straw,” referring to the grasslands along the river. The region was explored by Henry Hudson in 1609. A land purchase was made in this town in 1666 from local natives and confirmed as a patent in 1671. During the American Revolution, Haverstraw served as an important lookout for British activities on the Hudson. The town of Haverstraw was formed in 1788 while still part of Orange County, New York. The Long Path, a blue-marked trail, may be taken 2 miles eastward from Central Highway along the crest of South Mountain to High Tor. Little Tor, the second highest peak on South Mountain is halfway along the trail.

Natural beauty attracts people to Haverstraw, nestled between High Tor Mountain and the Hudson River. One of the longest publicly accessible stretches of waterfront in the Hudson Valley with miles of public shoreline, Haverstraw is a vital link in the pedestrian and bike routes from Nyack to Stony Point and more points north. With a ferry landing that connects to Ossining and the Metro North railroad, the Haverstraw ferry provides hundreds of commuters with access to mid-town Manhattan each day.

I had my furnace and A/C units replaced. The installer, Clayton, arrived on time with his assistant. He took the time to explain everything to me, then they proceeded to disconnect the old units and connect the new ones. They laid out drop cloths so that they could keep everything clean, and when they were done they cleaned up and took everything with them. Overall, they did an excellent job.
