Hillburn, originally called “Woodburn” and incorporated in 1893, is a village in the town of Ramapo in Rockland County, New York. Considered to be one of the more rural communities in Rockland County, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles. Hillburn is adjacent to the New Jersey border, on the southeastern edge of the Ramapo Mountains. It is immediately south of Harriman and Sterling Forest state parks. The village is bisected by the Ramapo River.

The village of Hillburn was founded in 1893. William Wait Snow, along with his partners George Coffin and George Church, established the Ramapo Wheel and Foundry Company, in 1866. Snow envisioned a company town far superior to the Hamlet of Ramapo and in 1872, he purchased property from James Suffern. The company began laying out streets and homes and called the tiny hamlet “Woodburn.” Water service would come to town the following year. The hamlet was renamed Hillburn in 1882.

Though Hillburn is only about 36 miles east of New York City, the historic Village has a small town feeling with about 1,000 residents. Hillburn’s location in the Ramapo Mountains on the New Jersey border provides the setting for outdoor recreation as well as cultural and historical attractions, including a walking tour of Hillburn’s historical monuments. A series of plaques set around town mark the events and individuals that shaped local and national history, including the home of early Hillburn resident William W. Snow and the Thurgood Marshall monument, which honors the first African-American to serve as a Supreme Court justice. Best known for the 1954 “Brown vs. the Board of Education” school desegregation case, Justice Marshall also won a 1943 desegregation case in Hillburn, and the monument documents this historic civil rights victory. Hillburn’s Veterans’ Memorial honoring local residents who sacrificed their lives in military service, is located in Hillburn’s Veterans Park. Set on a river bank, this community green space is filled with trees and offers waterfront benches and walking trails.

I had my furnace and A/C units replaced. The installer, Clayton, arrived on time with his assistant. He took the time to explain everything to me, then they proceeded to disconnect the old units and connect the new ones.
