Mount Ivy is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Haverstraw, New York. It is located north of New City, east of Pomona, south of Thiells, and west of Garnerville. It had a population of 6,878 at the 2010 census, and a total area of 1.5 square miles of land.
The name Mount Ivy is said to have been given to the hamlet because of its elevation and ivy marsh. For many years the Ramapough Mountain Indians were the habitats of this region. In the 18th century, the Mount Ivy area was the center of a Quaker settlement with a Quaker meeting House. Mount Ivy is the location where General Anthony Wayne’s troop rested and hid themselves before the assault of Stony Point fortress.
Mount Ivy is composed primarily of marshland, which serves as an aquifer for the Minisceongo Creek. Ecologically it serves as a water purifier and has been named by the DEC as a protected wetland area. A large 40-acre portion east of the Lackawanna railroad bed contains many species of trees indigenous to Rockland County. It has an abundance of Yellow Popular, commonly known as Tulip Tree. Mount Ivy boarders Gurnee County Park. This park is an old quarry arena, having a 40 to 80-foot cliff as a backdrop. The quarry first began business in 1896 and continued for 34 years. Rock was removed by hand drilling and blasting. The crushed stone was shipped by rail from the former Mount Ivy railroad station. The high quality of the stone was used for driveway and roadbeds throughout eastern and southern New York.
It is necessary for residents of Mount Ivy to have cooling and heating systems installed in their homes. It is located in a region of the United States that experiences warm summers and very cool winters. During the summer months, temperatures range from the upper-70s to low-80s. However, the area is not immune to heat waves and high humidity levels. During the winter months, freezing temperatures and many inches of snowfall are very common. Cooling and heating systems that are properly installed by professional HVAC technicians work to protect Mount Ivy residents and their homes from potential damages caused by harsh weather conditions.
