New Hempstead is a village in the town of Ramapo in Rockland County, New York. It is located north of New Square, east of Wesley Hills, south of Pomona, and west of New City. The village had a population of 5,132 at the 2010 census, and a total area of 2.8 square miles of land. New Hempstead is conveniently located approximately 14 miles from the Tappan Zee Bridge and 30 miles northeast of New York City.
Originally incorporated as a village in 1983, New Hempstead is rich in history. Of particular interest is The Brick Church, founded by Dutch settlers in 1774. The church’s original 1778 stone edifice was designed and built by members of the congregation. The present home of The Church was built in 1857 with bricks made from clay mined during the prime of Haverstraw’s brick industry. The graves of Revolutionary War soldiers and some original settlers are found in its church yard. The first pastors lived on the parsonage farm, which was sold in 1837, and is now the site of Rockland Community College. The cottage across the street from the Parish House dates back to the early 1700s. It was originally the home of Town Supervisor Tunis Kuyper and therefore became the first Town Hall. The Brick Church Schoolhouse established in 1786 was used through the 1960s for public education.
New Hempstead continues to be a vibrant and growing community. It is easily accessible from all major highways and the shopping areas of Monsey, Nanuet, and Nyack. New Hempstead also savors the peaceful fresh air environment and lush greenery of a suburban community.
Weather varies drastically each season in New Hempstead. Residents should have cooling and heating systems installed in their homes. The location of New Hempstead in the northeastern United States means it is susceptible to frigid temperatures during the winter seasons and warm temperatures during the summer seasons. Daytime temperatures vary from the upper-70s and low-80s during the months of June, July, and August. In the winter months, temperatures tend to remain in the 30s. When properly installed by professional HVAC technicians, central air conditioning units and heat pumps keep New Hempstead residents comfortable in their homes all year.
