Tappan is a hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Orangetown in Rockland County, New York. It is located on the northern boarder of New Jersey. Tappan had a population of 6,613 at the 2010 census, and a total area of 2.8 square miles of land.
Tappan comes from the Lenape word “tuphanne” believed to mean “cold water.” The Tappan were a Lenape tribe who inhabited the region surrounding the Hudson Palisades and the New York / New Jersey Highlands at the time Europeans colonized it in the 17th century. The Orangetown Resolutions were adopted in 1774 at the home of Yoast Mabie. The Dutch colonial house was built by his brother Casparus Mabie in Tappan. When Great Britain imposed duties on the colonies and closed the port of Boston, local residents passed resolutions calling for a boycott of British imports and exports on Monday, July 4, 1774, exactly two years before the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed. British Major John André, who conspired with Benedict Arnold to enable the British takeover of West Point, was captured in 1780 with the fortification plans, brought to Tappan, held at Casparus Mabie’s home, known as “Mabie’s Inn,” and brought to trial at the Reformed Church of Tappan. The Major was found guilty of espionage, hanged, and buried nearby. General George Washington, used the 1700 DeWint House, Rockland County’s oldest existing structure, as his headquarters four times between 1780 and 1783, and dined at Mabie’s Inn during the American Revolution.
Today the house known as Mabie’s Inn is a restaurant operating as The Old 76 House in the Tappan Historic District, a national historic district that encompasses 26 contributing buildings and three contributing sites. The district consists of 30 properties that reflect the historic commercial and residential core of the late 18th and 19th century village of Tappan. The Reformed Church of Tappan, The Old 76 House, Borcher’s Stable and The Burton Store are also located within the district boundaries.
Tappan is located in a region of the United States that experiences very cool winters and warm summers. Daytime temperature highs during the months of December, January, and February range from the low to mid-30s. During the months of summer, temperatures range from the upper-70s to mid-80s. However, humidity levels are high during the summer months which create an uncomfortable environment. Cooling and heating systems are necessary for Tappan residents. When properly installed by professional HVAC technicians, the systems protect residents and their homes from potential damages caused by extreme temperatures.
