West Haverstraw is a village in the town of Haverstraw in Rockland County, New York. It is located northwest of Haverstraw village, east of Thiells, south of the hamlet of Stony Point, and west of the Hudson River. The village had a population of 10,165 at the 2010 census, and a total area of 1.5 square miles of land. The majority of the hamlet of Garnerville is contained in the village of West Haverstraw.
The Village of West Haverstraw was incorporated on March 29, 1883. Grist mills were built along the Minisceongo Creek as early as the 18th century. In 1828 John Glass built a calico printing factory in the area of the hamlet of Garnerville within the Village of West Haverstraw. Glass was killed on a steamboat while taking his first shipment to the city when a boiler exploded. His business was taken over in 1838 by James and Thomas Garner who built the Garnerville Print Works into a prominent industry, from which Garnerville obtained its name and its income. Today the factory buildings, known as the Garnerville Arts and Industrial Center, contain a variety of small businesses as well as studios for artists and sculptors. These factory buildings date back to the 1840’s, as well as many of the homes built for the workers which still stand, making it likely the oldest industrial complex still in use today. In 1830 Elisha Peck brought machinery from England for a rolling mill that produced sheet iron, wire, screws as well as sulphuric acid and other chemicals, and later cannonballs and armament for the Union army. The area became known as Samsondale, for the ship Samson, on which Peck returned from England. In 1873 the New York and New Jersey Railroad ran from Jersey City through West Haverstraw. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, brickyards extended along the Hudson River from Haverstraw Village to Grassy Point, as brick became the area’s greatest industry.
Today West Haverstraw boasts several incredible parks facilities. The Samsondale Park features a playground, basketball courts, and a teeball field. Calico Hill contains several monuments honoring veterans. In Peck’s Pond Park, there is a roller rink, a playground, pavilion, softball and baseball fields, a basketball court, and the pond itself is encircled by an illuminated walking path
West Haverstraw residents find it necessary to have easy access to cooling and heating systems. The village is located in a climate that experiences frigid temperatures during the winter seasons and warm temperatures during the summer seasons. When properly installed by professional HVAC technicians, systems like central air conditioning units and heat pumps help West Haverstraw residents stay comfortable in their homes all year.
